About PayRecon

Helping service members understand their true compensation value — for any career decision

PayRecon helps service members understand their total compensation — whether you're considering re-enlistment, exploring civilian opportunities, planning family finances, or negotiating your next move. You don't need to be separating to benefit from knowing your worth.

The Problem We're Solving

Every year, 200,000+ service members separate or retire. A lot of them take the first decent offer they get—$80K sounds good until you're paying $1,500/month for health insurance and your CDC slot is gone. We built PayRecon because the TAP briefing doesn't cover this stuff, and most "military salary calculators" out there haven't been updated in years.

PayRecon gives you four numbers to cut through the confusion:

  • Your Military Base Pay: What appears on your LES (reference anchor)
  • Total Compensation: What your package is really worth
  • Break-Even Salary: The real comparison—what you need to bring home the same paycheck
  • Your Hard Deck: The lowest you should accept

Know your numbers before you negotiate. That's it.

Who We Are

PayRecon is part of Operation Tango—transition tools built by people who've actually worn the uniform. We're not a government contractor or a recruiting firm trying to sell you something. We're a small team building the tools we wished we had.

Operation Tango LLC develops data-driven tools for service members and families. PayRecon handles compensation analysis. We're working on more tools for job search, relocation planning, and retirement decisions.

What Makes PayRecon Different

Real DoD Data

Your numbers come straight from DFAS pay tables and current BAH rates—the same data finance uses. No "average military salary" guesswork, no outdated 2021 rates. Your zip code, your pay grade, your actual situation.

Four Critical Numbers

Most calculators give you one number and call it done. We give you four distinct outputs because your transition needs different perspectives:

  • Base Pay: What appears on your LES (reference anchor)
  • Total Package: What the military is actually paying you
  • Break-Even: What salary maintains your lifestyle
  • Hard Deck: Your minimum acceptable offer

Each number serves a different purpose in your negotiation and decision-making.

Comprehensive Calculations

We go beyond base pay. PayRecon accounts for:

  • • 12 special pays (SDAP, FLPP, Aviation, etc.)
  • • Childcare differentials ($15k-$40k/year)
  • • Security clearance premiums ($5k-$30k)
  • • Tax gross-up on BAH/BAS
  • • State-by-state tax differences
  • • Retirement system comparison (BRS vs High-3)
  • • Take-home reality check (military vs civilian)

This is the most thorough military-to-civilian compensation calculator available.

The Operation Tango Suite

PayRecon is one tool in a growing ecosystem designed for military transition:

  • MoveRecon - Location comparison and relocation planning
  • BenefitsRecon - Healthcare and benefits optimization
  • RetirementRecon - Long-term financial planning

Each tool is built on the same foundation: authoritative data, transparent calculations, and practical guidance for real decisions.

Our Data Sources

Transparency matters. Every calculation in PayRecon uses documented, authoritative sources:

Military Compensation:

  • • Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) - Pay Tables
  • • Department of Defense - BAH/BAS Rates
  • • Defense Health Agency - TRICARE Data

  • • Kaiser Family Foundation - Employer Health Benefits Survey
  • • Vanguard - "How America Saves" Annual Report
  • • Bureau of Labor Statistics - Employee Benefits Survey
  • • Care.com - Cost of Care Survey
  • • ClearanceJobs - Security Clearance Compensation Report

Occupational Data:

  • • O*NET® (U.S. Department of Labor)

We cite our sources. We show our math. We explain our assumptions. This isn't a black box.

Privacy & Security

We take your privacy seriously:

  • No account creation required
  • No data storage on our servers
  • Real-time calculations only
  • Encrypted HTTPS connections
  • No selling or sharing your information

You enter your data, we calculate your numbers, and when you close your browser, it's gone. We designed PayRecon this way intentionally—your transition planning should be private.

Who Should Use PayRecon

PayRecon is designed for:

  • Active duty service members evaluating career options
  • Service members at re-enlistment decision points
  • Military spouses managing household finances and planning
  • Guard/Reserve members comparing military vs. civilian compensation
  • Service members 6-24 months from separation/retirement
  • Veterans validating past decisions or planning next moves
  • Command Career Counselors advising on retention and transition
  • Financial advisors working with military clients

If you're asking "What's my military compensation really worth?", PayRecon is for you.

What PayRecon Is NOT

PayRecon is NOT:

  • • Financial advice (consult a qualified financial advisor)
  • • Official DoD guidance (we're not affiliated with DoD)
  • • A guarantee of specific salary offers
  • • A replacement for TAP or career counseling
  • • A job search or placement service

PayRecon is an educational tool. Use it to inform your decisions, but make your career choices with professional guidance and careful consideration of your unique circumstances.
